SHINE: Sexual Health, Identity, and Network Empowerment

What makes someone more confident in their ability to talk about sex with their partner(s)? How does the intensity of a gay person’s internal, negative feelings about same-sex attraction affect stress up to one year later? What associations exist between shame proneness, entitlement, and relationship quality? What helps someone thrive in polyamorous relationships?  These are all examples of research questions that fall under the SHINE Lab’s area of inquiry. Specifically, our research team studies three interrelated topics:

  • Interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that promote sexual health and pleasure
  • Sexual and gender minority (SGM) mental and physical health concerns
  • Associations between belief systems, self-conscious emotions, and interpersonal relationships
